One Map – 110 Factions

Crimson Desert features 110 factions spread across the continent of Pywel — from mercenaries and noble houses to goblin guilds, military organizations, cults, and mystical guardians. Your standing with each of them affects which merchants will trade with you, which guards tolerate you, and which groups fight alongside you.

Factions are distributed across five main regions of Pywel: Hernand, Pylyun, Demeniss, Delesia, and the Crimson Desert. Interaction with them happens through quests, the Contribution system, and liberation mechanics — when the player frees occupied settlements from hostile forces.

Reputation System in Crimson Desert

The reputation system consists of five levels:

• War
• Hostile
• Neutral
• Friendly
• Alliance

Most factions start as neutral. Your status changes depending on your actions: completing quests increases reputation, while attacking faction members or helping their rivals decreases it.

Exclusive merchants become available, offering weapons, materials, and crafting schematics that cannot be found anywhere else. Key Factions in Crimson Desert

Crimson Desert has over 110 factions. That's a lot, and most of them don't really matter — they fill out the world, add texture, give you something to stumble across. But a handful actually shape how the game plays out. Some open up new options, others block your path in ways you can't just fight through. Those are the ones worth knowing.

Greymanes — the faction of Cliff himself, and the most combat-capable potential allied army in the game. You start with a “Friendly” status and can reach Alliance by progressing through the story and reuniting scattered members of the group. Allied Greymanes deploy the strongest battle-hardened veterans, including those who fought in the early campaigns of Pylyun.

Goldleaves — a goblin trading guild with a unique entry mechanic. It is oppressed by the tyrant Split Horn. Defeating Kailok/ Split Horn in the Unicorn Cliffs automatically raises your reputation to “Friendly.” Shakatu’s quests can push it to Alliance, unlocking access to a unique trade network and rare imports from outside Pywel.

Black Bears — the main antagonists of Pylyun. Their leader, Myurdin, commands a faction that killed the region’s ruler and pushed the land back into dark times of violence. Encounters with them are purely combat-focused.

Antumbra Order — a dark cult with sanctuaries throughout Pywel. Their ideology is built on worshipping darkness through human sacrifice. One of the most detailed hostile actors in the game.

Bleed Bandits — a group that terrorizes Hernand using the drug Dreamer’s Bliss, turning addicts into slaves. Behind them stands an unseen powerful force that makes them nearly impossible to suppress through official means.

Most factions fall into one of two categories: those you build reputation with over time, and those you simply fight. The allied ones — Greymanes and Goldleaves — reward investment, unlocking soldiers, trade routes, and story content that hostile factions never offer. The rest exist to be dealt with, not reasoned with. Knowing which is which saves a lot of wasted effort.

Contribution System in Crimson Desert

In addition to the faction scale, the game features a regional Contribution system. Each major region maintains its own independent counter. Good deeds in Hernand will not improve your reputation in Demeniss, and crimes in one region will not damage your standing in another.

The game tracks your “morality” through a strict reputation economy. If you behave like a ruthless bandit, locals treat you as a threat. If you act like a hero, they literally open secret doors and grant you the best ceremonial armor in the game.

Special attention should be given to Contribution shop rewards: Faction Banners function as two-handed weapons with unique characteristics, Ceremonial Crowns cost 70 points and are the most expensive items in each shop, while Signet Rings for 65 points provide faction bonuses and are among the best accessories in the region.

Useful Tips

If you lose Contribution levels due to crimes, restoring them does not grant new points. Points are only awarded when exceeding your previous level before committing crimes.

Demeniss presents another trap: your first visit in Chapter 5 creates the impression that you can immediately dive into side content. In reality, most faction quests in the region remain locked until further progress in the main storyline.

It is important to understand the limits of the system. Pearl Abyss has confirmed that faction status does not affect the ending of the game. Factions are significant actors in the story and provide substantial content, but they do not change the final direction of Cliff’s journey. Reputation shapes the state of the world: who is available, which questlines are open, and how expensive goods are — but it does not determine the outcome.
